City of Glasgow College run eco jewellery competition

The City of Glasgow College recently ran a Jewellery Design competition for Secondary Schools in Scotland during Lockdown with the theme #climatemergency and received over 300 entries. The competition challenged young people to design a pendant that reflects the world’s climate emergency. Mirin Scott from Carluke High School has won the S1-S3 category for her design which highlighted bees becoming endangered. Grace Anderson from Blairgowrie High School took first place for S4-S6 with her pendant underlining the urgency of time. The City of Glasgow College ran a competition during Lockdown linked to their HND Jewellery students coursework to design a brooch for the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to wear to COP26. It was to be based on rising sea levels as an effect of Climate Change. The winning brooch was designed by a first year student Aileen Dickie-Adams, inspired by the Corryvreckan whirlpool in Scotland, the 3rd largest in the world. The City Fringe Partnership was a ground-breaking public and private sector alliance between the London Development Agency, the London boroughs and private business partners which ran from 1996 - 2009. In 2017 Pforzheim, Germany will celebrate the 250th anniversary of its jewellery and watch industry. The city will mark this anniversary with unique exhibitions and spectacular live acts, with jewellery and design art, with conventions and congresses, with plenty of music and theatre and it will demonstrate which innovations have developed out of Pforzheim’s traditional industry. It was Margrave Karl Friedrich, who in 1767 issued the privilege to create a pocket watch and silverware manufactory in Pforzheim. The Guild of Enamellers is delighted to announce Valentina Boneva as the 2019 winner of their annual Bursary Award. Valentina recently completed the HND Jewellery at Glasgow Kelvin College, Glasgow. Valentina started working with enamels this year as a means to add colour to her work and to complement the use of gemstones in pieces. Katharina Kraus is a fine jewellery designer and maker from Munich, Germany. She first graduated from the Berufsfachschule für Glas- und Schmuck, Neugablonz in 2007. In 2016 she graduated from the Städtische Meisterschule für das Gold- und Silberschmiedehandwerk in Munich with a degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing. In the lead up to Christmas 2023, jewellery making supplier, Cooksongold, has collaborated with students from Argent College, to create three inspiring sterling silver jewellery making kits. As part of their work experience module, students from Argent College designed a sterling silver flower necklace, swirly heart shaped earrings necklace set and feather themed bracelet and earrings, from scratch. New building for University’s School of Jewellery

Birmingham City University’s School of Jewellery is set to expand, following a new building acquisition in the city’s St Paul’s Square. Previously home to Abbey College, the School will take on 10 St Paul’s Square in April, opening in September 2019 as a new postgraduate jewellery design and research facility with new design studios and offices for staff and doctoral researchers. The School of Jewellery’s library and computer suite will also move to the new 11,200 sq ft building, enabling the conversion of rooms at the existing and historic core Vittoria Street site for additional studio space for undergraduate students.

Guðbjörg Kristín Ingvarsdóttir is a goldsmith, Jewellery designer and co-founder of the award-winning sustainable jewellery brand Aurum, Iceland's leading jewellery brand. Three second year students studying for a Higher National Diploma in Jewellery and Silversmithing at the Birmingham City University's School of Jewellery have been shortlisted as finalists in an annual design competition run by Birmingham-based casting house, 3D printing and bespoke manufacturing company Weston Beamor. The brief for this year’s Live Project was to design a halo engagement ring and a fitted wedding band to sit alongside it. The planning applications have now been submitted for a new Creative Enterprise Centre project in Winchester. British jewellery designer Phoebe Walsh has created a series of 5 miniature flower pressing books in recycled Sterling Silver, each containing a single war flower from the new frontlines in Kyiv.
